As I walked my dog the other day, a plane soared overhead, reminding me of my own life's takeoff to new horizons when I made the move to Manila eight years ago. It marked the beginning of my full-time career in financial advising and agency building, a journey that has transformed and enriched my life in ways I could never have imagined.
The Essence of Growth
Throughout these years, I've come to understand that life, much like the seasons, offers us phases of immense learning and growth. It's crucial to look beyond the surface of our careers—not just as a means to earn a living but as opportunities for personal transformation. What aspects of your character are being refined or developed? What parts of you are stretching beyond your comfort zone? These reflections are far more significant than the dollars earned.
I have seen my journey mirrored in my clients and colleagues. Each stage of my career has come with its own set of lessons and challenges, contributing to my development as a person and a professional. I am preparing for a talk in Miami, Florida for the MDRT Annual Meeting where I’ll discuss the pivotal concept of a growth mindset. It’s something deeply personal to me, as my own growth journey has been nothing short of transformative.
Overcoming Shyness and Embracing Strength
As a child, I was shy and timid. The fear of speaking my mind or making mistakes held me back. I knew I was smart, yet I lacked the confidence to express my ideas in public, always worried about the judgment of others. Even in college, I carried this burden. But today, I stand proudly as someone who has overcome those fears. I learned to value my voice and contributions, realizing that they hold significance.
This transition didn't happen overnight. It was a process of constant effort and conscious growth. I realized that in life, we must be ok with the discomfort that comes with change. Much like when lifting weights at the gym, growth requires enduring some level of discomfort. If there’s no challenge, if there’s no discomfort, then maybe there’s no growth happening.
Finding Joy in the Struggle
Many people believe that comfort and growth can coexist, but my experiences have shown me that the opposite is true. True growth often takes place in moments of struggle and discomfort. These are the times when you grow the most and learn the deepest lessons. Rather than fearing these challenges, we should welcome them. Every moment of difficulty is a chance for something great to unfold.
Life’s unpredictability is part of its beauty. While we may not always understand our journey, it's okay to take a leap of faith and know that everything eventually aligns for the greater good. Embrace each trial, knowing it shapes you into a better version of yourself. Much like I found my voice over the years, you, too, can find yours and thrive beyond your fears.
The Exciting Possibilities of Life
In our lives, there are countless opportunities awaiting us—opportunities that challenge us and propel us towards growth. My journey from a timid individual to someone who proudly stands in front of large audiences to share insights about growth and potential has taught me that we are all capable of much more than we think.
So, as you reflect on your journey and the challenges you face, remember that these are the building blocks of your growth. Rejoice in these moments, and welcome the discomfort as a sign of unfolding potential. Life is about maximizing what we’ve been given and stepping into every potential we possess. Let's continue to be mindful of the paths we're on and seize every chance to stretch and grow, ensuring that we live lives full of purpose and expansion.
