Embracing Global Adventures: Discovering Cultures Through Work and Travel
90-Day Challenge: Day 38 of 90
For twelve years, my work was more than just a job—it was an astounding journey that took me across the globe. As someone deeply connected to my home country, the Philippines, I never imagined how much my career would allow me to experience diverse cultures and traditions. Not only did I get to live and work in countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Australia, but my consulting role also opened doors to incredible business trips to Europe, North America, and the Middle East. Traveling was part of my routine, and each experience was transformative.
A Journey of Exploration
Reflecting on this time, I remember how my corporate job as a technology consulting manager for a major multinational firm helped me build a vast network of contacts across different continents. It wasn’t just about business; it was about immersing myself in various cultures. I attended traditional weddings in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, each richer in customs and traditions than the last. These occasions made me understand and appreciate the communities I worked with, bridging cultural gaps through genuine human connections.
Such experiences were reminders that even while away from home, you can find a sense of belonging anywhere. During my seven years based in Singapore, I would often find myself in the airport more than at home. Every Monday, I’d leave Singapore for work and return by Friday, turning airport lounges into my second home. People often joked I was “an overseas Filipino worker” even while living in Singapore, but my reality was one of constant movement.
The Life On-the-Go
During this period, I juggled multiple responsibilities across countries, which meant having multiple wallets, SIM cards, and even phones. Without modern conveniences like eSIMs or dual SIM phones, managing communications was quite a task. But I enjoyed the challenges; they made every day an adventure. Though it was hectic, this lifestyle taught me invaluable lessons in adaptability and resilience.
Now, life has changed. I no longer miss the frequent flights or the rush of airport check-ins. Yet, I still travel often for both work and leisure. Fortunately, work is more flexible nowadays, allowing me to balance productivity with the joy of exploration. While I’ve stepped away from the pressures of IT consulting, that chapter contributed significantly to my personal and professional growth. It shaped me, and for that, I am grateful.
Future Horizons
What I do miss is the vibrant global dynamics of my previous job. I dream of going global again in my current industry. Bringing my experiences and learnings to advisors worldwide fills me with excitement. This drive to share, impact, and contribute meaningfully to the global community keeps me motivated. With every step forward, I hope to leave a lasting impact, much like the remarkable people and cultures I once encountered during my travels.
Embracing Opportunities
So, what’s next on my path? Hopefully, more global opportunities that allow me to engage with and contribute to diverse communities. Travel, after all, is about more than destinations; it’s about the incredible narratives we weave through our experiences and the legacy we hope to leave behind.
