Beyond the Policies: 10 Years in the Insurance Business and the Unexpected Lessons That Shaped My Life
90-Day Challenge: Day 11 of 90

Ten years. A decade. It's a significant milestone in any journey, and my journey in the insurance business has been nothing short of transformative. (No, this isn't a sales pitch, I promise!)
It all started with a part-time agent role, a way to explore a new opportunity. Then, in 2017, when I moved back home, I took the leap and became a full-time agent. Little did I know that this decision would not only shape my career but also profoundly impact my personal growth in ways I could never have imagined.
The Challenges of Transition
The transition from employee to entrepreneur wasn't easy. There were hurdles to overcome, uncertainties to navigate, and a whole new world to learn.
Income Volatility: Saying goodbye to a steady paycheck with scheduled payouts was a significant adjustment. Income in the insurance business can be unpredictable, with no guarantees. It was a stark realization that "no work, no pay" was the new reality, and while hard work could lead to big rewards, it required a different kind of discipline and resilience.
Diverse Backgrounds: My previous role as an IT consulting manager in Melbourne meant I was surrounded by fellow tech professionals. In the insurance world, I encountered people from all walks of life, spanning different generations and experiences. It was a crash course in communication, adaptability, and understanding diverse perspectives.
Building a Client Base: With no prior sales experience, building a client base from scratch was a steep learning curve. It required me to step outside my comfort zone, develop new skills, and learn how to connect with people on a deeper level.
Balancing Sales and Recruitment: As I progressed, the need to recruit new agents to build my team and climb the leadership ladder added another layer of complexity. It was a constant juggling act, learning to identify potential in others while still focusing on my own sales goals.
The Unexpected Rewards
Looking back, I'm incredibly grateful for the challenges I faced. They pushed me to grow, adapt, and discover hidden strengths I never knew I had. It was more than just a job; it was real-life training for running my own insurance agency business, which now boasts over 130 agents and a team of exceptional leaders.
The Biggest Lessons
Here are the most valuable lessons I've learned along the way:
Self-awareness: The journey forced me to look inward and understand myself on a deeper level. I discovered my resilience, my strengths, my worth, and the core values that define my character.
Self-confidence: Navigating tough times and overcoming obstacles instilled a deep sense of self-assurance. I know I can face challenges head-on, especially with the support system I've built over the years.
Power of Vision: "To think is to create." This principle has been a guiding force. Five years ago, I shared a vision with my team of building a general agency in a prime business location. That vision became a reality, and today, we're thriving.
No Shortcuts: There's always a temptation to take shortcuts, to compromise for the sake of expediency. But I've learned that true success is built on integrity and a commitment to doing things the right way. Compromise might offer temporary gains, but it's not sustainable in the long run. Trust me on this one!
Relationships are Everything: Above money, business goals, and even challenges, relationships are paramount. This applies to both personal and professional life. Nurturing strong connections, built on trust, respect, and empathy, is essential for a fulfilling and successful life. Choosing relationships over issues or financial gain leads to a more peaceful and meaningful existence.
More to Come
I'm passionate about sharing these lessons and diving deeper into each one in future posts. Stay tuned for more insights and reflections on my journey in the insurance business and beyond.
